The subject of Charlson's art has always been about the human body;
her figures explore, reveal, and simultaneously conceal aspects of relationships. Charlson
frequently works from two or three models at a time, drawing inspiration from the interaction
between the models and herself. Her sculptures have been in clay and bronze, but her newest
work is in glass. Charlson uses transparent colored glass in the lost wax, pate de verre
method that transforms the work into colorful three dimensional "paintings" during
the casting process.
"Glass, like the body and the psyche, is both vulnerable and resilient. I love the
accidents that happen. In the kiln."
