Claudia Vess's installation New Modern Times is a wry look at one of
the legacies of contemporary culture. Named for the Chaplin film, Modern Times, this vast topography
transforms styrofoam packing materials into a structure of beauty, and complexity five and a half feet high
by thirty six feet long. The clear shapes and dramatic shadows create suggestions of ancient ruins, new
town planning, order and congestion. The conjured images seem to glide from aerial to cross section views
and from archaeological to futuristic visions. While the objects these forms once housed have worn out
long ago, these packing materials collected over many years transcend their origins.
