The exhibit has as its underlying theme language and geography, the grounding forces in any person's
life. fatherland dedicates each panel to one of the states - its capitol's distance to D.C.,
to Baghdad, and to Mars (closest to the earth in the summer of 2003).
mother tongue is depicted in a series title, "Con Text." A runic alphabet script
is stamped on mulberry paper and then is buried (hidden) under overlapping horizontal rows of
vertical inked marks.
"Storyline" uses fragments of text from Italo Calvino and thin, rhythmic lines caught
in the fiber of hte nepali paper.
"Visa" uses stamps of visas of exit and entry permits washed over with walnut and sumi
inks and crayons. Here the fragments of language constitute an enigmatic inscription of
governments at work.
