Working on canvas, panel and paper with oil crayons, ink washes, stamps and text, Pittsburgh artist
R.E. Levine explores the decorative, kaleidoscopic and confounding nature of patterns - their iteration,
shift, interruption and redirection, and, finally, their function.
The works in the Echo/Shift series, in Hundred
Happiness, and in the Three Flag series are
complemented by an installation of 20 handmade books held by newspaper sticks. Devoted to the
'imperial rescript' of pre-WW II Japan, the room sized installation utilizes Tokyo newspapers
from 1931-4 to illuminate the redirection of an entire nation's pattern.
