in medias res features 12 Japanese album notebooks, a challenging new
format for Pittsburgh artist, Ruth E. Levine. The starting point for Levine's
project is a small black moleskin notebook, 31/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches in size.
Surprisingly, the interior paper unfolds, in accordian-like fashion, to 108 inches
in length.
The artist says, (I was) "taken with the encapsulated form of the book and with
the length of the paper. I began playing with the concept of progression."
Levine creates her visual narratives in paints, mineral paints, colored pencils,
stamps, and inks on both sides of the extended paper. The narratives range from
a painterly interpretation of an excerpt from the Odyssey, "The Wine Dark Sea,"
including lines in both Greek and English, to a more graphic interpretation of
a newly created Russian fairy tale, "Once Upon a Time." Some are purely formal.
The books reveal a repetition of pattern or gesture on the front and back of the
long paper in a continuous flow. In order to view both sides, the books are
displayed standing in a 3-dimensional installation. Each book is accompanied
by at least one wall-hung work on paper.
The books follow Levine's work on materials such as slated board and handmade
papers which are dominated by accumulated marks. In these new works, she states,
"I played with a mark and a pattern that sometimes became more painterly than
I knew I was capable of."
Levine began her career at American University where she received her BA and MFA,
and was a professorial Lecturer. Levine maintained a studio in Bethesda and
exhibited with Gallery 10 and Group 93 for many years before relocating to
Pittsburgh. For almost a decade now, Levine has had regular shows in Pittsburgh
and was awarded the Arkus Prize in 2005 in the 95th Annual Exhibition of
Associated Artists of Pittsburgh at the Andy Warhol Museum.
The public is invited to Receptions on First Friday, May 7th and on Friday, May 28, 6pm to 8pm.
